Dark Places is not chill. It comes from the mind of Gillian Flynn, the same person who gave us Gone Girl and Sharp Objects, so what do you expect? 

Dark Places is the kitchen sink of murder-mystery; there’s satanism, molestation, neglect, poverty, drug abuse, arson, theft, etc. Take your pick! But it’s a polished kitchen sink and everything fits into place. I don’t usually read thrillers, but this was a page-turner and I didn’t roll my eyes at the end. Flynn managed to keep me engaged and curious, yet still genuinely in the dark about the killer for 300 pages. Then, she tied together multiple loose ends in ways that were logical, creative, and satisfying. I had a good theory going, but I was wrong :( and while that sucked for my ego, her ending was better.

Aside from the plot-- the writing is sharp. Libby--the main character--is complex and well-written. She’s unlikable in a lot of ways, but I also have empathy for her. Like, she annoys me..but her family was murdered, so I get it. 

Overall, if you want a quick, smart, suspenseful read-- Dark Places is the place to go. It receives 4 out of 5 flames.
