Do you have a kid? If you do, please drop everything (not your baby) and immediately order My New Human by Kelsey Summer.

Ok sure, Kelsey is my friend, which clouds the objectivity of this whole thing. But A) Literally everything I write here is subjective, B) MY FRIEND PUBLISHED A CHILDREN’S BOOK, and C) It’s genuinely very, very good (otherwise I’d come up with weird excuses not to review it).

I love children’s books because, like many people, it’s how I got into reading in the first place. My parents read to me a bunch as a kid and now I love reading more than anything in the world. I really do believe that reading to your children is important and will make them smart, especially as the world becomes increasingly digital. In 20+ years, adults will rely on the Musk-microchips in their brains to remember things and they’ll all talk like unoriginal bozos except for your unique, intelligent kid. But only if you read this book.

Seriously, I’m very impressed with My New Human. It’s written from the dog’s perspective and it follows the dog’s curiosity about adding an infant to the family. What is this new human, why is it here, and how do I go about embracing it? I read the book to my own dog but it’s unclear whether or not she fully digested the message.

Here are some of my main takeaways: the ending was both creative and poignant, the writing appeals to both adults and children, and the illustration is insanely good. This is a book you will want to read to your kids! If your child picks it out of the line-up, you will smile rather than roll your eyes. I’m proud of you, Kels!! My New Human receives 5 out of 5 flames.
